LONDON HEADLINE SHOW – 22ND JUNE @ THE ISLINGTON

“Osterberg is an incisive force, convincing me that the real locus of power can be found in restraint instead of hysteria; vulnerability, not brassy pomp” – Stereogum

Sea Lion – AKA Gothenberg native Linn Osterberg – has today announced her debut album Desolate Stars, anticipated 28th August onTurnstile (Perfume Genius, Christopher Owens, Cate Le Bon et al). To celebrate, Stereogum have premiered a brand new song in the shape of ‘Ghostlands,’ saying it “sounds like the skeleton of an old Cat Power song submerged in a wetsuit. It sounds like the whirring that comes out of a seashell when you put it up to your ear. It’s impossible to think of this as anything but an underwater folk song. “Ghostlands” coasts on wind, waves, and spray, the chance delicacy of water hanging in a vast, enormous force”.

In an age of noisy, confident musicians, there’s something refreshing about the shadowy stillness of Desolate Stars. Written and recorded alone in her bedroom, Linn Osterberg explores what it is to be an uncertain in an age ofcultivated personae under cover of slow darkness: her distorted electric guitar melts into a watercolour wash, a piano plays like the ghost of a Leonard Cohen ballad, while the close-mic’d intimacy is as intimidating as Cat Power’s earliest records. Initially, it feels almost voyeuristic to listen, until the record’s spellbinding aura drags you under.

Osterberg shares that willingness to confront her anxieties and bring herself to life through song with her “absolute super-mega female influences” Cat Power and Mazzy Star. Their influence is palpable, and against grave, reverberating electric guitar, Osterberg’s idiosyncratic singing voice also calls to mind the watercolour folk pastorals of Drag City’s Jessica Pratt. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Osterberg writes and records in total solitude—as with last year’s Big Moon EP (she’s obsessed with space and astrology), Desolate Stars was made at home, which feels remarkable given its piercing clarity and consummate atmosphere.

Sea Lion is set to play a special one-off London show on 22nd June at The Islington, where she’ll debut songs from the new album. Desolate Stars, due out 28th August, follows the release of two well-received EPs released last year through Turnstile: ‘Big Moon EP (Early Songs)’ in October 2014, and ‘Cobra Eyes EP’ which preceded it in June 2014.
